We raise a cupcake to the teachers of Seattle World School in Capitol Hill!

Seattle has many schools of all types full of teachers and professionals who are dedicated to the learning and well-being of their students. We reached out to the community to learn about some of these teachers and schools and we have been amazed at the response. Parents, students, administrators, and others wrote in with heartfelt stories about the care, sacrifice, and long hours given by teachers and the difference it makes for so many individual lives. Cupcake Royale wants to help show appreciation for the heroic work our Seattle teachers are doing, so for each day of Teacher Appreciation Week, we are surprising the faculty of a deserving Seattle school with a delivery of free cupcakes! A Random Act of Cupcakes!

And today we surprised Seattle World School on Capitol Hill! Here is what one person said about Seattle World School:

Seattle World School is a public school in Seattle that serves primarily new immigrant and refugee students of Middle and High School age (11-21 years).

I am not a student or parent of a student, I manage the school based health center within Seattle World School and have had admired the dedication, compassion and skill that the teachers and staff have working with this remarkable and complex group of students and their families.

As most of these families are very new to the U.S. and are quite busy building a new life for themselves and their children it seemed unlikely that they would have access to this opportunity to celebrate and recognize this great staff!

The teachers, support staff and administration at Seattle World School (SWS) do not have the support of a PTSA to help with all those little extras that make such a difference to the students. Things like fundraising for school events falls to the teachers to support the students (which often means they provide whatever materials/resources are necessary for the fundraiser and then they essentially buy back those materials and resources to support the students!). Currently they are in midst of planning prom and graduation which includes finding donated formal wear so the students can celebrate in style. It is also this dedicated staff who create opportunities for sports teams – including things like arranging for donated track shoes and other necessary equipment.

Those are just a few of the extra roles that the staff at Seattle World School take on in addition to skillfully instructing students from around the globe, many who have complex social and emotional needs as result of past trauma and displacement. This is a really amazing group of people who are essentially introducing these kids and their families to American culture, education and opportunity. This is a GREAT school serving strong and courageous families with respect, compassion and skill!

I hope you’ll bring them some of your delicious cupcakes!

Thank you –
